New emergency declaration issued
On Thursday, Gov. Kelly issued a new 15-day state of emergency and signed two executive orders aimed at addressing staffing shortages at hospitals and nursing homes as COVID-19 cases climb in Kansas.

Among other things, the first executive order allows nursing staff with an inactive or lapsed license to provide “medical services appropriate to the professional's education, training, and experience.” It also allows health care professionals licensed in other jurisdictions to practice in Kansas. The second executive order is similar in nature but applies to nursing homes.

On Friday, the orders were approved by the Legislative Coordinating Council. The orders will expire Jan. 21, unless extended or altered by the Legislature after it returns on Monday. It is expected to be the subject of early discussion and action.
